Suggestions for holding a successful book drive:

Select a particular period of time (from a week to a month) to have the drive.

Notify students, parents, co-workers about the drive through notices in school newsletters, email, flyers, posters, etc.

Give participants as much encouragement as possible to bring in books. We have found that the more encouragement students receive from teachers and fellow students, the greater the number of books that are donated. It also helps for parents and students to be told ahead of time to start saving books.

If you are organizing a drive for the Children's Book Project, please call us at: (415) 401-6315 or (510) 238-2301 ext. 1 if you need further information and/or to arrange for pick up or delivery of the books.

Below are a sample notice for a newsletter and a sample book drive flyer.

Our school will be having a children's book drive beginning Monday, April 19, 2004, and continuing through Friday, April 23. Please have your children bring their "no-longer wanted" or outgrown books to school. Remember books are gifts that can be opened again and again. These books will be distributed to various children's facilities, including homeless shelters and daycare centers, that have a great need for books. Containers will be placed outside the office.
